LP Mechanik – the widest typeface

...on Earth! A display all caps design inspired by the nameplate of Romanian Railway electric locomotives CFR class 40/41/42. When I started documenting these emblems on the side of the humming engines, my question was:

what if these letters were even wider?

How wide a typeface can be? How long can the string be stretched?

Mechanik is very wide by default, and at its widest point it is elongated by a whopping 250%. Intended use cases would be strong-and-long headlines, movie titles, posters, billboards, any situation where you want to say a ton in one or two or three words. Mechanik, in a no-nonsense way, it’s way too unusual and quirky for running text, so, as they say, “typographer’s discretion required”.

From these letterforms, you can even make patterns! They become more abstract in the widest versions while retaining something of the mid-century-modern vibe from the original. So set the variability scale to an upper value in your favourite design app, or use the six predefined styles: Wide, Kilowide, Megawide, Gigawide, Terawide and Petawide.
